Torikizoku opened its first restaurant in the Philippines on Oct. 12, introducing its grilled-chicken dining format to Metro Manila. The Japanese operator plans to expand across metropolitan shopping malls as it pushes beyond its home market.
Targeting Metro Manila Malls
The company selected the Philippine capital region for its initial location, tailoring its yakitori concept to urban consumers. The format relies on shopping mall foot traffic, competing for everyday dining spend alongside established casual restaurant chains.
Philippine consumers consume substantial volumes of poultry, led by homegrown fast-food chains and local barbecue specialists. Breaking into this dining segment requires Torikizoku to price competitively against domestic players while maintaining the uniform skewered-chicken menu that built its domestic reputation in Japan.
Regional Expansion Strategy
Japanese food-service chains face saturated domestic conditions and an aging population in Japan, prompting operators to pursue Southeast Asian metropolises. Torikizoku follows a path carved by Japanese ramen and beef-bowl brands seeking new revenue in consumer-heavy regional capitals.
For mall landlords, adding branded Japanese dining concepts drives tenant diversity and pulls younger dining demographics into property assets. Torikizoku must manage imported seasoning supplies and fresh domestic poultry distribution to keep margins steady across international borders.
Building Southeast Asian Footprints
The Manila launch follows Torikizoku evaluating markets across East and Southeast Asia to replicate its high-volume, low-margin business model abroad. Securing prime mall commercial space remains the primary constraint for fast-food operators scaling across Greater Manila.
Local operations will test consumer reception to Japanese-style yakitori as regular mealtime dining rather than evening drinking fare. Torikizoku has not yet disclosed unit targets for subsequent store openings across Metro Manila.
