Methodology
- 01Ten constituents. Listed companies whose revenue is driven by Asian retail and commerce, spread across China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.
- 02Equal weight. Every company counts for 10% of the index, so a mid-cap specialty retailer matters as much as a mega-cap marketplace.
- 03Base 1000. The index is rebased to 1000 at the start of the trailing one-year window, so the level reads directly as performance since then.
- 04Daily closes. Recomputed every trading day from official closing prices; missing local holidays are carried forward.
- 05Review. The basket is reviewed editorially twice a year; changes are announced on this page.
How to read it
Above 1000 means the Asian retail complex has gained ground over the past year; below means it has lost it.
Breadth the advancers versus decliners count, tells you whether a move is broad-based or driven by one or two names.
Divergence between the marketplace names and the store-based retailers is usually the story worth reporting: it points at where consumer spend is shifting.
What the RNA-10 is, and what it isn't
What it is
- It is our own test. We put together a basket ourselves and track it publicly to see what a diversified slice of Asian retail would have returned.
- It is a reporting tool. We use the level, breadth and movers as context in our coverage, nothing more.
- It is transparent. Constituents, weights, base and data sources are all published on this page.
What it isn't
- You cannot buy it. There is no fund, ETF, certificate or exchange ticker for the RNA-10, it is not listed anywhere.
- It is not a licensed benchmark. It is not administered, audited or regulated, and no product may be priced against it.
- It is not advice. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Prices may be delayed or incomplete.
The RNA-10 is an in-house experiment by RetailNews Asia: we assembled our own basket of ten listed Asian retailers to see what such a portfolio would have returned. It is not a licensed or tradeable index, there is no fund, ETF, certificate or ticker behind it, you cannot buy it on any exchange, and it is published for editorial information only, never as investment advice.
