Pet care in Asia

Humanisation, veterinary adjacency and a supply chain still catching up

Pet care behaves like premium personal care with a veterinary conscience attached. Ownership is rising across urban Asia, spend per animal is rising faster, and the buyer treats ingredient quality and professional endorsement as decisive. What has not kept pace is the supply chain: cold and specialist manufacturing capacity is thin, imports carry long lead times and duty exposure, and the retail landscape is fragmented between specialist chains, clinics, grocers and marketplaces. This dossier explains where the profit in the category actually sits and what we watch as it professionalises.

What we are watching

  • Premium food leads spend

Diet is where humanisation shows up first — grain-free, fresh, prescription and life-stage ranges pull the average basket up well ahead of accessories.

  • Services attach to retail

Grooming, boarding, insurance and veterinary care are being pulled into retail formats because they generate the visit that sells the food.

  • Local manufacturing thin

Most premium product is imported. Lead times, duty and cold-chain limits shape assortment more than consumer preference does.

How the category is structured

  • Specialist pet chains lead in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and increasingly Vietnam and Indonesia.
  • Veterinary clinics are a significant retail channel for therapeutic diets and parasiticides, with their own regulatory status.
  • Grocers carry mainstream food and litter; marketplaces carry the long tail and the price benchmark.
  • Pet insurance and pet-friendly property are adjacent markets that shift ownership economics for the household.
